"After  finally  defeating  my father, I  decided  to  enter  my  first
ty; the  1931   Il  Downstate  at  Decatur.  I was  shown  no mercy
and finished  well  down  in the  minors.  I was  discouraged  and  probably would  have  quit the game  had  it  not  been  for the  encouragement of my  coach, Harland  Richards,  1933  Il  state  champion,  who  loaned me  books  and  also  many practice games  at our  local  chess  & checker  club. Two  year  later  I  finished  3rd  in  Class  A,  after winning  over  the  1928 Il  state  champ, Oscae  Apple,  of Rock Island,  and  was  "hooked  for  life":this  in my  77th  (!!!) year in the game . "  ( RLF ) 2/22/2008

RUBIN WINS TOURNEY, AND THE DISPUTED TITLE OF AMERICAN CHAMPION, AS THE NCA WAS A NEW ORGANIZATION, IN DIRECT COMPETITION WITH THE AMERICAN CHECKER ASSOCIATION. THIS TOURNAMENT MARKED THE FINAL APPEARANCE OF RUBIN IN US NATIONAL TOURNAMENT PLAY. RATHER FITTING THAT IN IT HE DEFEATED RYAN, THESE TWO HAVING ONE OF THE GAMES GREAT RIVALRIES OF THE DAY.
